Outreach Events

The Daedalus "Introduction to Rocketry" outreach program is a several day event in which K-12 students are taught basic rocket fundamentals by experienced Daedalus personnel and are asked to apply those same concepts in the construction of their own rocket.

The teaching portion includes such topics as solid rocket motor theory, basic newtonian physics relating to lift and drag, as well as center of pressure and center of gravity determination on a rocket. Using these same concepts the students apply their own unique mix of creativity into their individual or group rocket designs from a supply of elementary building materials.

The outreach program culminates with the launching of the students' rockets from either their own schoolyard or at one of ASU's recreational fields.

Navajo Elementary is a Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) focused school. As a result of the Science & Engineering Enriching the Development of Students (SEEDS) proposal, the ASU Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering works closely with Navajo on a variety of programs.

These incoming engineering freshman stayed in ASU dorms for 5 weeks and earned actual college credit through the SEE Summer Bridge Program hosted by the CEDAR center. In addition to the normal routine of building their own rockets, these bright young students were asked to develop a computer program to calculate the projected altitude of their rocket. The rockets were also designed to carry a small altimeter so they could compare their actual altitude with their predicted altitude.

This on-campus program (run by the CEDAR center) lasted for two weeks and included an egg-drop competition into the normal routine of just building and flying model rockets. The egg-drop competition proved to be a messy affair...

Daedalus was invited back to host the rocket outreach program for this continuation of the AFJROTC Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp. Unique to these two camps was the fact that Army, Navy, and Marine ROTC students were invited as well. This made for some stiff competition.
