Navajo Elementary is a Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) focused school in Scottsdale. As a result of the Science & Engineering Enriching the Development of Students (SEEDS) proposal, the ASU Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering works closely with Navajo on a variety of programs. One such program was our rocketry outreach program, which was completed at the end of January, 2009. This specific outreach program involved 79 very creative 5th graders with a grand total of 59 small model rockets! Special thanks go out to Dr. Lynn Cozort of the MAE department and Navajo Elementary Science Specialist Diana Campbell for setting up this program. Even more thanks are in order for the VERY patient teachers of the three classrooms we took over. From what we heard, all of the 3rd and 4th graders (who also came out to watch the launches) now expect to be building rockets when they move up to the 5th grade. Hopefully we'll back in the future; we'd hate to dissapoint!
Daedalus Project Manager James Villarreal is also writing a "how-to" booklet for our outreach program as part of his NASA Fellowship for Spring 2009. The purpose of the booklet is to chronicle our lessons learned and provide illustrated step-by-step instructions for building small model rockets. The narrative is geared towards teachers that might want to perform this program in their own classrooms and will include a FAQ. More importantly the booklet explains the flexibility of the program by applying suitable variants of the program to different grade levels. This booklet will be uploaded to the website when completed.
